“Render unto them a recompence, O LORD, according to the work of their hands. Give them sorrow of heart, thy curse unto them. Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD.” – Lamentations 3:64-66 KJV
Did you know that a born-again, spirit-filled Christian can still be under a curse? Legally, we have been redeemed of the curse when Jesus Christ laid down his life for us (Galatians 3:13). But we do not automatically walk into that redemption. God rewards righteousness. He also rewards sin in the form of curses (Eckhardt, 2000). Satan, who is our adversary does not want us to experience all the promises and blessings that God has for us and he will do everything in his power to keep us from receiving what is legally ours. If we continue to sin; it opens up a spiritual door that lets the enemy steal, kill, and destroy. So, he will attempt to keep us ignorant to detour or deter us from being blessed with all that God has promised us. Satan will try to put lies in our head to have us believe that what God has said in His Word is not true (John 8:44). Dr. Henry Malone states, that a curse can be compared to an evil rope attached to a person and to something that has occurred in the past (Malone, 2004).
When we believe the lies of the enemy, it can open up a spiritual door of generational curses. Some of the ways that the spiritual door of generational curses can hinder believers from experiencing a life of abundance is via ancestral curses. Sins that have been committed by our ancestors who have never repented and renounced the sins they committed or asked God to not punish their generation or children from being penalized/punished for the sins they have committed. Words that are spoken can also lead to curses in our lives. A curse of poverty is an example of a generational curse. “Growing up, my parents always struggled to make ends meet and I believe that I will experience the same thing in my adult life.” An example of a generational curse. A family member who is poor and they sells pecans or walnuts by the weight to make money for the household. They put the nuts in a burlap bag. Underneath, the nuts they place stones to add weight to the bag and are deceiving the people they are selling the nuts to. That opens up a door for a generational curse of poverty if the stealth and deception of that sin has not been repented for and renounced to keep later generations from experiencing a generational curse of poverty.
We tend to do the wrong thing thinking that no one will know. If you understand how the devil works. He roams the earth seeing who he can devour (1 Peter 5:8). When we do things against the Word of God. Like stealing or deceiving people, even if it is to help ourselves or our families. It opens the door for a curse to come into our lives.
Familiar spirits can also contribute to generational curses. You and your family can experience a manifestation in certain areas in your lives due to the curses that are active in your bloodline. Some of those areas can include addictions. You or your family members can be susceptible to drug addiction or alcohol addiction. Your family members may experience the same sin patterns. Some examples are sexual sins, breaking vows, and covenants not only with spouses and business partners, but also with God.
Illnesses are another example of generational curses. Cancer, diabetes, mental illness, and plagues can come upon someone who has a generational curse operating in their bloodline. It can reach each generation or skip generations. When our iniquities are not dealt with spiritually, it gives Satan the legal right to bring sorrow to us and bring destruction into our lives. Some of our sins will bring multiple curses into our lives. (Jeremiah 16:18, Exodus 22:18, Leviticus 20:1-5, Leviticus 20:6, Leviticus 20:11-12, Leviticus 20:15).
To be able to break generational curses, we need to be knowledgeable of curses, how they operate, and how they manifest. We need to be able to identify which curse may be operating in our lives. We need to be able to know how to break the generational curses that are operating in our lives. We as Christians have to believe the promises of God and there are times that we will have to do spiritual warfare battling Satan against those curses. In the book of Ephesians, Paul talks about arming ourselves with the armor of God. We also have to learn how to effectively use that armor. Continue to follow my spiritual door series as my next text topic will discuss the spiritual door of emotional trauma. Once I discuss each spiritual door. I will give you some ways to help you break the curses in your bloodline. Until next time, be blessed!
“Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;” – Exodus 20:5
