What Roots Are You Growing?

“And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.” – 2 Kings 19:30 KJV

Have you taken time to think about what roots you are growing? Did you know;  that you can tell what type of root you are growing;  by the fruit that is showing in your life? You can also tell what roots have grown in your children’s lives as well. Often,  what your children grow up experiencing is a direct link to what you exposed them to.

You may wonder what I am talking about when I say the fruit that is showing in your life. Well, I am glad you are wondering; because I want to enlighten you. As I read and study the Bible, I noticed that many individuals in the Bible experienced either blessings or curses in their lives based on the things that they did.

For instance, when you look at Adam and Eve. They had everything that they needed, and they had daily interactions with our Heavenly Father. How many of us would like to be able to see God face to face regularly? Talking and laughing with Him. Sitting at the dinner table with Him. Okay, maybe they were not sitting at the dinner table. You get what I am trying to say.

God gave some specific instructions to Adam.  Genesis 2:17 KJV states, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” It was Adam’s responsibility to share those instructions with his wife, Eve.  Genesis 2:22 KJV “And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.”

Then comes along the serpent who subtly manipulated Eve with his words. He was so savvy with it; that she even spoke something that was not true. Genesis 3:1 KJV states,  “Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”  Eve said in Genesis 3:3 KJV “But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.” If you go back to Genesis 2:17 KJV, God says that they cannot eat it. He did not say anything about them not being able to touch it.

Eve ended up listening to the serpent. Genesis 3:6 KJV states, “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” Once Adam ate of the fruit, it caused him to get out of alignment with God.  Genesis 3:9 KJV states, “And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?” Because of what happened, God said in Genesis 3:24 KJV, “So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.”

Adam and Eve ended up getting kicked out of the Garden of Eden. They rebelled against God and He could not allow them to stay in the Garden of Eden. Please read for yourself Genesis, chapter three to learn more about the consequences of the decision of Adam and Eve to eat of the fruit from the tree God forbid them to eat from. Due to the rebellion of the parents. One of their children became rebellious as well. Cain killed his brother Abel when God did not accept the sacrifice that he presented. You can read the story of Cain and Abel in Genesis, chapter four.

The roots that we grow in our lives will bear fruit that can either bless or curse us. The first family in the Bible shows you what can happen when you have a root that has grown into a curse. Do you want a root that brings the fruit of a curse or a root that brings the fruit of blessings?
