Agape vs. Eros — What I Learned About Real Love

Red heart beside cross on dark gravel. Faith hope love

For years, I thought I understood love.

I had been in multiple relationships — even one marriage — and believed that deep feelings meant real love. But it wasn’t until I truly encountered God’s love that I realized the difference between Eros love and Agape love.

Eros is emotional — passionate, exciting, and often temporary.
But Agape is sacrificial, patient, forgiving, and anchored in God’s character.

As 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 reminds us:
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Looking back, I can say — none of my past relationships reflected that kind of love.

I experienced Eros, but not Agape.
And that revelation didn’t break me — it freed me.

It helped me stop chasing emotional highs and start craving spiritual depth.

Now, I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know this:
If God brings another spouse into my life, he will love me “just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25).

Until then, my heart is rooted in the One who first loved me (1 John 4:19).

I’m growing in His Word, walking in His will, and helping others get to the root of what’s been hindering them from receiving true love — the kind that never fails. As well as getting to the root of any spiritual issues that they believe may be hindering them not only in their spiritual life, but in their regular life as well.

Reflection:
Have you ever mistaken Eros love for Agape love? What helped you recognize the difference?
